A number of you expressed interest in the trip we are planning to Washington D.C. We are in the process of finalizing the details. We have locked in the dates of April 27th – 29th and will be staying at a hotel that will be easily accessed by the metro. The cost of the trip (room and activities) will vary depending on room occupancy so we have a couple price levels depending on your room occupancy as follows:
Single occupancy room – $375.00 per person if you register by February 24th ($425.00 thereafter)
Double occupancy room – $225.00 per person if you register by February 24th ($270.00 thereafter)
Triple occupancy room – $175.00 per person if you register by February 24th ($210.00 thereafter)
Quadruple occupancy room – $150.00 per person if you register by February 24th ($185.00 thereafter)

We have a number of activities planned including tours of the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Monuments at Night, Arlington Cemetery, Mt. Vernon & George Washington’s house, and the Young Republican Leadership Conference (additional fees apply if you choose to attend YRL Conference).

However, in order to get tours of the White House and Capitol Building, they must run background checks of all parties attending. Normally this must be booked 6 months in advance but we will be submitting our information this week and are working to get this passed despite the deadline. In order to tour the White House and Capitol Building, we must have the name, address, date of birth, and social security numbers of all parties attending. There is no cost to put your name on the list but we must pass all of this information on to the representatives at the White House tomorrow night. Therefore, if you have any interest in attending, please get me this information by close of business February 3rd so we can add you to the tour list and you can worry about registering and making payment later.

If you do not get me the information above, you will still be able to attend the trip, you just will not be able to tour the White House.

Depending on the number of people that sign up, the OCYR’s may also get a bus to take all attendees down.

Thank you so much for your interest and I hope to talk to you soon. If you have any additional questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at OCYRTeam.President@gmail.com.

Hello Everyone!

The Ocean County Young Republicans are currently planning a fun and educational trip to Washington D.C. I know a number of you have signed up already but we’re still looking for more! We’re looking to set a date but we’re looking to see which dates work best for the most amount of people. No one will be locked into the trip right now but we’re gathering interested parties and dates. Below are the three weekends we are looking at:

*March 23rd – March 25th

*March 30th – April 1st

*April 27th – April 29th

We have a number of activities planned including tours of the White House, Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Monuments at Night, Arlington Cemetery, Mt. Vernon & George Washington’s house, and depending on the weekend we will be able to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20 – April 27th) or the Young Republican Leadership Conference (April 26th-29th – additional fees apply if you choose to attend YRL Conference).

Since we do not have a weekend set yet, costs are only estimates but our initial cost estimates are approximately $380-$440 per person. This will include a bus to bring us to and from Washington D.C., two nights in a hotel in the city, and food during the trip/stay.

Please e-mail OCYRTeam.President@gmail.com and cc Chris.Filiciello@gmail.com if you are interested in coming and which weekends you would be able to attend. We need a response by Friday, January 6th in order to properly plan the trip.

(CBS/AP) SIOUX CITY, Iowa – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is endorsing Mitt Romney for president.

Haley said Friday on Fox News she is throwing all of her support behind Romney in the Republican primaries. She says jobs, the economy and spending are most important and the former Massachusetts governor is the best candidate to address those issues.

Haley also said President Barack Obama seems most afraid to face Romney.

Haley, a Tea Party favorite, is a rising star within the GOP and her endorsement in the first-in-the South primary state has been sought by many other presidential contenders.

Her endorsement could prove pivotal for Romney in South Carolina as he looks to burnish his conservative credentials and push back against criticism that he hasn’t demonstrated a consistent commitment to conservative ideals through his political career.

“I think this Nikki Haley [endorsement] … is big. It’s the Tea Party that doesn’t like Mitt Romney and I think that is where his problem is. The problems with Mitt Romney [are] why we have these anybody-but-Romney candidates come up,” Bob Schieffer, moderator of “Face the Nation,” said on “The Early Show.”

Romney will appear with Haley Friday afternoon in South Carolina. Haley says they will campaign together Saturday.

The Democratic-controlled Senate on Wednesday rejected two proposed versions for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution — a setback to GOP leaders and conservative activists who say the measure is necessary to end the federal government’s spiraling deficit spending.

A Democratic version opposed by Republicans fell on a 21-79 vote. Then a Republican version also failed to get the two-thirds majority required with a 47-53 vote.

Last month, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives failed to pass a GOP-proposed amendment, falling 23 votes shy of the two-thirds majority required for passage.

The congressional votes on the amendment were agreed to by both parties in August as part of the agreement raising Washington’s debt ceiling.

Democratic leaders, however, are vehemently opposed to the idea, arguing that it would force the government into an economically destructive cycle of massive spending cuts.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said Wednesday that a step as historically significant as a constitutional amendment was unnecessary.

Getting government spending under control “takes political will, even political courage,” Durbin said, but “it doesn’t take a constitutional amendment.”

Conservative Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah disagreed, saying Congress has repeatedly proved it’s unable to control itself on spending.

“We are taxing and spending this country into bankruptcy,” Hatch said, later adding, “We don’t have any restraint around here.”

Despite the proposal’s defeat, it has been favored by the public. Nearly three in four Americans favored passage of the amendment in a July 18-20 CNN/ORC International Poll, while 24% were opposed.

Sixty percent of Americans say they believe a balanced budget amendment is necessary to get the deficit under control, according to the poll.

The House passed a balanced budget amendment in 1995, but the measure fell one vote short in the Senate in both 1995 and 1997.
